How it works

One exercise, four phases, no screen needed.

A lab is six exercises and a dialogue. Each exercise gives you a model, then eight to ten variations. You answer every one out loud during the pause; the recording tells you if you were right.

The method in full

Transformation drills, not translation: change the pronoun, the tense, the negation, the way a French speaker does without thinking.

Why no microphone

The lab cannot hear you. That is the point.

Speech recognition passes almost anything and fails on sentences you said correctly, so it teaches you that the details do not matter. They do: je l'ai fait and je l'ai faite are different sentences.

Instead, the correct answer plays two seconds after yours, while your version is still in your ear, and you repeat it. That comparison is the exercise, and your ear is better at it than any model.

Nothing is recorded, nothing leaves your phone, and you can do a lab on a walk or in a shared flat without holding a phone up to your face. The full argument.

What a lab looks like

The sheet shows the model of each exercise and nothing else. The variations are only ever heard, so you have to produce them.

Revision and shadowing arrive with accounts in beta; the lab and the daily drill are live now. Structures come back on a schedule (one day, three, seven, twenty-one) so the sentence that was hard in Lab 1 is easy by Lab 9.

From the late 1950s every university language department had a room of booths, headsets and tape decks. The tape asked, you answered in the pause, the tape answered, you repeated. The drills worked; the room did not. It was expensive, timetabled at eight in the morning, and a technician could listen in on any booth without warning.
